There have been many a Couturier and muse pairing. Hubert de Givenchy had Audrey Hepburn, Hermes had Jane Birkin and Yves Saint Laurent had Loulou de la Falaise. Now Jean Paul Gaultier has Dita Von Teese.
This is a far from surprising union, both have a taste for extravagance, fetishism and, well, neither are shy. Gaultier appears to like a certain type woman; feminine and uninhibited in her approach to style but true to her own vision. Von Teese has an appreciation for French fashion and for the finer things in life. So when they meet in 2002, to collaborate on a piece for Flaunt Magazine, where Von Teese would pose in some of Gaultier’s achieves items of haute couture. Clearly the stars aligned to create a pairing capable of great creativity and showcasing of the female figure.
Von Teese rarely walks the runways for designers. She did twice for Gaultier. Once in 2007 and 2010 (the third and forth picture down are from that last show, plus they are a favourite of mine).
Hopefully there will be much more from this wildly imaginative and professionally provocative pair.
