Originally known as Sac a depeches, it was originally crated in 1892 as a bag for carrying saddles. Hermes has a rich heritage with riding and horses (their emblem is a Horse drawn carriage), over time this has evolved into a more box style handbag. Of course, you cannot mention the Kelly bag without mentioning the lady who inspired its most famous name. Apparently Grace Kelly fell in love with this bag when costume designer Edith Head bough the bag for Kelly, working on the film ‘To Catch a Thief’. What could be more glamorous then using such an exquisite couture bag to hide your pregnant belly? Well Grace did, from then onwards the Kelly bag was christened.
Unsurprisingly, this is still Hermes’ best selling bag. Previous famed Kelly admirers included Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Elizabeth Taylor and Now it is used by glamour pusses like Daphne Guinness, Madonna and Beyoncé. If I were a very wealthy lady I would procure this timeless piece of art, however since these bags are many thousands of pounds; the wait will continue.
