Rubies and Romance

While Diamonds are supposed to be a girl’s best friends. My personal preference for precious jewels are Rubies. For one, I love the colour red and appreciate the warmth of these scarlet stones. Plus you don’t tend to see so many of the current crop of trendy wannabes sporting these sensual gems. Traditionally, Rubies are associated with love and passion.

The word Ruby is derived from the Latin word ruber which means red. It is considered to be one of four precious stones, including Sapphires, Emeralds and Diamonds. Historically speaking, Burma (now Myanmar) has been a major source of Ruby mines although they can be found in Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, India, Cambodia, Nepal, Tanzania, Madagascar, Afghanistan, Kenya, Tajikistan and a few US states.

As far as famous Rubies goes, the Cartier Ruby set (see bottom image) worn by Elizabeth Taylor is certainly a notable example; Bought for her by third husband Mike Todd while on holiday in the South of France. Taylor was swimming laps in the pool, when Todd presented her with Cartier’s famous red box. He placed the necklace on her, plus the earrings and bracelet. Taylor had to look in the water to see the complete set on her. How wonderful a life Taylor enjoyed, when you could be given an exquisite jewellery set as a treat from your husband, just for swimming in a pool!
