Thierry Mugler: Alien Definition

When you think of the kind of men who create haute couture, a body builder maybe not be your first, second or tenth guess. Then again Thierry Mugler is not a really a ‘typical’ couturier.

Born on 21st December 1948 in Strasbourg, France. Though he began sketching at the tender age of 9, his first real love was ballet.

Once in Paris, Mugler began his designing career with the boutique, Goulade. After 2 years, Mugler left to free lance. To experiment, to find his style. In 1973, he designed his very first collection. During the 80’s, Mugler reached the pinnacle of haute couture acclaim. 1992 saw the release for his perfume ‘Angel’, combined with the subsequent scent ‘Alien’ have generated approximately $280 million. In addition to his usual designing duties, Mugler has collaborated with the likes of BeyoncĂ© (for her I am… World tour), George Michael (for the music video Too Funky) and in 2002 for the Cirque du Soleil.

What makes truly defines Muglar’s work is definition. He likes the emphasise the body’s shape; anatomical and clean lines. As a child of the late 80’s-early 90’s, I remember certain designers with a tinge of nostalgia (even though I had no appreciation for fashion). Muglar was one of those designers. Though Mugler does not appear to hold the same kind of press coverage, I look forwarded to his structured yet sexy outfit.

  1. Gorgeous pieces. When I lived in Europe, I almost bought a Thierry Mugler suit. I didn’t and I am still kicking myself…

    1. Maybe it was not meant to be.

      1. The problem is that I still dream about it….sigh.
